Isar river

The Isar Cycle Route accompanies the most Bavarian of rivers from its source to mouth. Beginning high in the Karwendel Mountains in Tyrol the Isar flows over the border to Bavaria after a few kilometres and flows through the Isarwinkel region, an historic landscape where a Bavarian revolt against the Habsburgs climaxed in the Bavarian People’s Uprising. Ludwig Ganghofer wrote a work of literature dedicated to the defeated Bavarians with “Der Jäger im Fall”. From Bad Tölz, which has gained fame due to a crime thriller series set there, the Isar Cycle Route leads through the gentle moraine landscape of the Alpine foothills and then through the Munich gravel plain on the way to the Bavarian capital.

As early as the Early Stone Age people found this area attractive: Celts and Romans settled here but the history of Munich only began with the construction of a bridge over the Isar by Henry the Lion. As the residence of dukes and kings the city experienced its most prolific construction era in the classic style under the reign of Ludwig I but as the capital of Bavaria it also has numerous modern buildings including the Olympian centre and the Pinakothek der Moderne (Modern Art Museum).

Continuing along the Isar Cycle Route you will cycle through the hilly landscape of Lower Bavaria and shortly come to Landshut. The town was also once a seat for dukes and was in fierce competition with Munich. Trausnitz Castle, the picturesque Old Town and St.Martin with the highest redbrick church tower in the world are just a few of the impressive monuments in the city to its eventful past.

The Isar River was never suited to shipping, only timber rafting was significant and is used as a tourist attraction today. Numerous nature reserves and re-naturalisation areas give the river its unique appearance and provide attractive habitats to rare animals such as the bluethroat and beavers. The Isar Cycle Route combines the beautiful river landscape with cultural highlights for cyclists along the banks of the Isar River.

The Isar Cycle Route would not be complete without the Upper Bavarian Lakelands through which it flows. The lakes of Ammersee, Starnberger and Tegernsee are words which excite every holidaymaker in the region. Here splendid activities can be combined with Bavarian hospitality.

As you can see there is much to discover along the Isar Cycle Route. We look forward to welcoming you!
